Strange Stuff Revisited: ESRI + New PDF = Where Maps Go To Die? | Jun 02nd 2008

See, the quake was the website update for Adobe Acrobat 9 Extended!

…A friend once told me, “PDF is where data goes to die.” If that holds true, then geoPDF is where maps go to die…

Word on the street is that ArcGIS 9.3 will natively export to this new Acrobat format. Schweet.

The other neat thing that I’d like to point out is the Flash embed capability for Acrobat. Could the ArcGIS Server 9.3 Flex API be embedded in the PDF for dynamic mapping?

Just forget about workflow for a moment. Is it possible?

Ok, now think of the workflow. Could it have the potential to be another SharePoint-like pain in the butt?

Adobe = Upgrade (with the potential to Fail!)
ESRI = Upgrade!
TerraGo = Fail!

  2. I don’t understand why you (or anything) thinks that PDF content is “dead”..in fact, it’s exactly the opposite since it is the only format that supports BOTH presentation AND semantics.

    If you can connect to it with Flash, JavaScript, SOAP (etc.), then YES – you can integrate it into PDF.

    What problems do you foresee with workflow?

    Have I met the singularity?

    Sounds like the OGC’s initial complaints about KML.

    $699…for Acrobat Pro Extended to make the damn things. It’s just a format guys.

  4. Hey, can I get an upgrade to Acrobat 9 Extended? I just bought CS3 Design Premium a few months ago for school. Would love to see what I could do.

  7. Ive always considered PDF output for my ArcMap mxds to be static images that would go into reports or sent off to clients for review.

    Ive only just found that 9.2 allows you to export and retain the layers – allowing the client to turn data on and off.

    I have also received pdfs that allow you to query the objects within the map (not output from ESRI, perhaps something in 9.3 or future?)

    What are the disadvantges? Looks good from where I sit – possibly larger file sizes I guess.

  9. If you want to see ‘live’ GIS content in a PDF, then check out LOGIQ PDF.
    Adobe’s PDFs are dead compared to LOGIQ PDF – which embeds the native GIS data. Of course, Adobe doesn’t like LOGIQ PDF because it makes their PDFs look bad – so they won’t allow Global Map Systems to distribute their maps on Adobe Reader; an effective anti-competitive manuever. ESRI also doesn’t like LOGIQ PDF because it makes the PDF ‘too alive’ by embedding the native GIS data.
    Unfortunately, the big players in the market are doing a great job of preventing great new technology from reaching end-users. Sad state of affairs…
