Partaking in James’ and Steve’s little back-n-forth action in the back channels. I have to rile them with, “We should all be surveyors!”
Or, end up working for Sean.
Personally, I think we all know better on this one. We’re going to be selective, and sometimes, we may not be when it comes to community generated data. Metadata or not. If you stick to the “garbage in, garbage out” mindset. We should all be ok. It’s just going to be a bitch if you want to use community created geodata for a professional project.
Reminder: Read the terms of use for most maps.

I have been making maps and working with geodata for almost a decade and still rely on our resident surveyor. If I didn’t work closely with a surveyor, I think I would be way too overconfident about my knowledge and really screw something up. Just when I think I fully understand a concept, I run it by him just to learn that there’s some little aspect that I didn’t know about. Surveyors are the most careful and probably anal workers I know. There should be a surveyor involved in any type of mapping and/or GIS work to keep the work honest and the most accurate.
